Overview of Course:  

This activity will enable the learner to appreciate the course of the discovery and development of anesthesia as a practice of medicine. The learner will gain an understanding of the factors that led to modern anesthesia and the changing relative roles of nurse and MD anesthesia, including an examination of where nurses might increase their future contributions. Modern anesthesia results from several factors. The most important was the recruitment of increasingly better qualified and trained nurse and physician anesthetists.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the factors that determined how anesthesia was developed.
  2. Describe how and why anesthetists progressively increased in quality.
  3. Describe how anesthetists increasingly contributed to gains in clinical skills.
  4. Describe the scientific advances that lead to the development of anesthesia as a scientific discipline.
